How To Stay Calm and Rational After Being Arrested

July 7, 2020

One of the most frightening and uncomfortable experiences in life is getting arrested. It doesn’t matter whether you know the reason for your arrest. Being handcuffed can make you anxious and uneasy. Your hands may start shaking because you’re not used to such treatment. You’ve seen videos of people losing control as they’re being arrested. They’re not to blame for the reaction because their human instinct of fight kicks in. Unfortunately, such behavior can get you into more trouble. You should learn how to remain calm and rational during an arrest. Luckily, we can help. If you ever find yourself in such a situation, use the following techniques.

Be Still

When the officer arrests you, don’t move. Stand where you are and relax. He or she is an officer of the law and has been trained to react if you offer any form of resistance. Therefore, stay still and don’t make any quick movements. Surrender yourself to the authorities.

Breathe

It can be a bit difficult to concentrate when officers are cuffing your hands. That’s because your body is trying to process everything that’s happening. But it’s not impossible to concentrate. As the officer is arresting you, talk silently to yourself. Encourage yourself to breathe. Focus on your breathing, and you’ll regain control over your emotions.

Follow Orders

The officer will tell you what to do during the arrest. If they ask you to lie down on the ground and put your hands behind your back, do so without resisting. You should also limit what you say. You can politely ask them to call your criminal defense attorney. If you talk too much, you can incriminate yourself. Resist the urge to talk back at the police officer.

Know What Comes Next

As the police take you to the station, think about what you’re going to do. First, you’ll need bail money to get you out. Think about who you’re going to call for that money. Next, consider your attorney options. Are you going to use a public defender or call your attorney? Start recalling everything that happened up until the time of your arrest. That information can help you win the case.

Use the above tips to keep a cool head during your arrest. Aggressive behavior can get you in trouble. When you arrive at the station, find out your charges and talk to your lawyer. Don’t talk until your attorney tells you to do so.
