Various Types Of FFC Connectors and Modular Jack Connectors

December 9, 2015

Flexible flat cable (FFC) connectors and modular jack connectors are highly beneficial electronic equipments. They are used for numerous different purposes and are i0rreplaceable. In this article, we are going to elaborate on the various types of FFC and modular jack connectors in complete details.

FFC Connectors and its types

As the name suggests, flexible flat cable is quite thin and is highly flexible. It is generally used in electronic devices that have a high density like mobile phones and laptops. These are available in various options for you to choose from. Following are a few of those in more details.

FFC connectors vary from one another in the following 4 aspects:

  • Pitch
  • Socket entry type
  • Socket contact type
  • Options for locking

Based on socket entry type, FFC connectors can be divided into two broad types:

  1. Side entry flexible flat cable connectors

The pitch of the side entry FFC connector varies between 0.5 mm and 1.00 mm. The socket contact types could be of two variations that include bottom contact and top contact. The lock types could be either flip lock or slide lock type. The minimum number of contacts is 4 and it goes up to a maximum of 60. The profile options are 1.2 mm, 2.0 mm or 2.5 mm.

  1. Top entry flexible flat cable connectors

The pitch options include 0.5 mm and 1.0 mm. This type generally comes in surface mount type. In addition to that, the locking type available in this kind of flexible flat cable connector is slide type. The minimum number of contacts is 4 and it goes up to a maximum of 60. The profile is 4.4 mm only.

Modular jack connectors

This type of connector was primarily used in telephone wiring. It is now used for many other purposes other than that. The modular jack connectors can be distinguished into various categories depending on a few aspects. Here are we are going to discuss about two based on mount type options available. These are as follows:

  1. Surface mount modular jack connectors

The total numbers of positions available in this kind of modular jack connector are 4, 6 or 8. However, the numbers of positions that are loaded come in the options of 2, 4, 6 or 8. This type of modular jack connector is generally unshielded and they come without LEDs. It has one port. The PCB (Printed Circuit Board) orientation options are either vertical or right angle. They also come with or without panel stops.

  1. Through hole modular jack connectors

The number of positions for the through hole-modular jack connector are 6 or 8. The number of positions loaded could be 2, 4, 6 or 8. These connectors could either be shielded or unshielded. Additionally, the latch type could be inverted or straight. The rest of the specifications are similar to that of surface mount.

When buying FFC or modular jack connectors, you should only consider getting the best ones available and you can get the best at Global Connector Technology.
