What It’s Really Like To Get A Spray Tan

July 25, 2016

Everyone seems to be sporting a tan these days, many of which come from a bottle. Self-tanners have come a long way from the original ones that produced streaky orange tans you could tell were fake from a mile away. Today, you can buy lotions, creams, sprays, and mousses at a relatively cheap price and apply your own tan in the privacy of your home. The only problem is that you will quickly learn it’s never easy to apply anything to all areas of the body evenly. Although a professional spray tan costs more, it is worth the investment to get a natural-looking tan without getting your deepest, darkest color on the palms of your hands.

There are numerous differences between one spray tan and the next, with the most significant being the method used to apply the tanning solution. Some salons have machines that do the work without the need to have a technician in the room. These machines also vary in quality and their ability to apply the solution evenly across your body.

The other method for applying the solution is a handheld airbrush gun that is used by a tech to literally “paint on” the solution. This is the most precise method as it allows them to apply the amount of solution needed to obtain the color that is right for you and even allows for contouring. Tamar Vezirian of Gotham Glow explains that the perfect tan enhances the individual’s beauty; it doesn’t cover it up.

A Matter of Privacy

When you go to your appointment, you will have the option of wearing a swimsuit, thong, or being nude. Although some people are uncomfortable with the idea of being tanned by another person while they are nude, skilled technicians should be able to put you at ease. In order to get the most professional spray tan without tan lines, having your tan applied by a technician is the best option.

After determining what depth of tan you want to achieve, the technician will begin to apply the tanning solution. She will direct you on how to move in order to make the application seamless. Once the process is complete, you will need to wait for the solution to dry before you dress and go home. To prevent the transfer of tanning solution from being visible on your clothes, you should take dark-colored, loose fitted clothing to wear home.

After the Tan

The tanning salon should provide you with guidelines for how long to wait after the application of the solution before you shower. To preserve your spray tan as long as possible, you should not wax after the application and avoid using exfoliates that will speed up the fading process. The preparation that goes into your appointment and the care you give your tan afterwards will determine how long the tan lasts. With a little effort, you can count on getting your money’s worth!
