Cabin Nightmares: 4 Problems You Might Come Across

June 2, 2021

Owning a cabin will give you the opportunity to spend time in nature and relax. Unfortunately, there are some cabin nightmares that you might have to deal with. These are some of the problems that you may come across.

Leaky Roof

Many cabins are surrounded by trees. Because of this, leaves and branches can fall on the roof and cause damage. Leaves that are left to sit on the roof for an extended period of time can contribute to the roof rotting. Falling branches can put holes in the roof or tear shingles. All of this can lead to the roof leaking. Unfortunately, many cabin owners don’t realize there is an issue until they visit their cabin after some sort of precipitation has occurred.

Plumbing Issues

It’s not uncommon for cabins to have plumbing issues. Tree or shrub roots can grow into septic or water lines. They can cause damage and can keep your plumbing from working properly. Your toilets might not flush properly, or you may have low pressure because there’s water leaking out of one of your outside pipes.

Animal Infestation

If you don’t occupy your cabin often, animals may see it as an opportunity to make it a home of their own. They tend to live in attics, walls or any place where it’s dark. Infestations can include a variety of animals such as raccoons, squirrels and rats. If not dealt with quickly, these animals can cause thousands of dollars in damage. However, you may be able to avoid an animal infestation by not making it easy for animals to access your cabin. Make sure the cabin structure is in good shape every time you visit your cabin.

Heating and Cooling Problems

Even if you don’t visit your cabin often, you still need to have your heating and cooling system maintained. Failing to do so can cause problems to occur. This can include having the coolant recharged or replacing the batteries in the thermostat. It’s a good idea to have your heating and cooling system serviced at least once a year even if you don’t plan on using your system in the near future.

Your cabin may be your pride and joy. However, it can come with some problems that you weren’t expecting. All of the cabin nightmares mentioned above are pretty common. By being prepared for all of these problems, you’ll know how to deal with them if they do occur.
