Wings and Dust: 4 Signs Of Termites to Look For

August 18, 2021

There’s no doubt about it; pests are extremely sneaky and can often make their way into your home with little to no problem. However, most common home pests (mice, cockroaches, ants, etc.) are easily spotted, thus providing you the ability to quickly find a solution and get rid of them before they cause too much damage. Unfortunately, not all pests are so easily spotted. For example, termites are tiny creatures that make little to no noise, and by the time you’ve spotted them, the damage has already been done. Thus, the following includes four signs of termites that you want to keep an eye out for throughout your property.

Damaged Outdoor Wooden Furniture

One of the best ways to catch termites before they crawl into your home is to spot and eliminate them while they are still outside. How can you do this? If you have any wooden furniture or structures around your property, taking the time to look for damage at the base area of their structure can give you a great warning sign that termites are on your property. In this case, it is highly recommended to contact a pest control company to ensure that the termites are dealt with immediately and effectively.

Subtle Noises in the Walls

If you’re just walking around your home, you may not hear them, but if you take a stethoscope to your walls, you might hear small clicking sounds. That sound is coming from what are called “soldier termites” banging their heads on your walls. They do this when they sense danger. A small knock on the wall can disturb them enough to where they may begin making noise.

Termite Swarms

Spotting termite swarms outside your home is a tell-tale sign that you have a large colony of termites already living within your home. This may be one of the more difficult signs to find (as they only appear a few times a year), but it can also be one of the most telling.

Rough or Worn Wood

Perhaps the best way to quickly figure out if you have termites is to walk around your property and begin touching the base of your home to see if the wood is rough to the touch. Although some areas can be caused by normal damage from the elements, wood that is worn down and has small marks across it can be a sign of termite activity.

As you can see from the information above, there are  several signs that can tell you if you have termites within your home. If you do discover them, it is highly recommended to contact a pest control service company as soon as possible.
