Important Maintenance and Repairs That Will Keep Your Diesel Engine in Good Shape

May 2, 2021

You need to give proper care and attention to any vehicle you have if you want it to last. Whether you have a diesel or gasoline engine, proper maintenance ensures the longevity of your car. Gasoline and diesel engines have different methods of maintenance, but some are the same. But all this depends on how you use the vehicle.

Diesel vehicles are often used for laborious work. This is because they can do various tasks such as pushing, pulling, and carrying heavy loads. If your vehicle performs such tasks, constant maintenance is critical for excellent performance and condition. Here are some of the simple methods and handy tips for diesel engine maintenance:

Choose Your Fuel Wisely

Choosing the right fuel station is one of the methods of securing your diesel engine. This is because low-quality fuel might have terrible effects on your fuel injectors. You usually have four fuel injectors, and they can be damaged by low quality fuel. One of the ways to tell that your injectors are damaged is seeing extremely white or dark exhaust fumes from your vehicle. To protect the fuel injectors, when filling your car, be sure of the filling station and choose the best fuel quality.

Check Your Cooling System

We have come a long way in terms of the efficiency of car engines. However, a lot of energy is still lost during combustion in the form of heat. This heat isn’t good for the metals and alloys which your car is made up of. For heat dissipation, ensure there is ample cooling for the vehicle. Give your vehicle a short cooldown time to allow the circulating engine oil to remove heat from the turbocharger so that the engine oil doesn’t cook. Also ensure that the coolant you are running in your engine meets the OEM specifications.

Maintain the Fuel Injector

Though the common rail injector is designed to last, poor maintenance and other issues leave it vulnerable to wear and tear. Some of the reasons common rail injectors fail are deposit build-up, incorrect installation, and particle or water contamination. A faulty fuel injector causes a wide variety of problems. It may disrupt the regular spray of fuel in the combustion chamber or prevent it altogether. Inspecting your injectors regularly, using good oil, and replacing air and fuel filters are some of the ways you can maintain a fuel rail injector.

Install Effective Air Filters

Air filters should be regularly inspected and repaired. They can be checked without removing the air filter and then brought in for replacement. The effectiveness of the air filters depends on the environment and climate where you are driving. These filters require close monitoring if you are in extreme weather conditions. Regular maintenance increases fuel efficiency, reduces emissions, and prolongs engine life. For the longevity of your engine, protect it by ensuring the air filters are always clean and functional.

Change the Fuel Filter

Fuel filters should have routine maintenance and replacement schedules. You usually have two fuel filters—a primary fuel filter, and a secondary fuel filter. They should all be cleaned and replaced at the same time for optimal cleaning. They are usually replaced when the vehicle has covered approximately 12 to 15 thousand miles at most. Frequent filter changes prevent dirt and debris from entering the engine and damage the pistons, cylinders, and other components. These issues can come with a high cost of repairs for your engine.

These tips are for general maintenance of your diesel engine to ensure better performance. It’s worth noting that diesel engines are different due to various factors such as vehicle type, manufacture of the engine, and vehicle use. Sound maintenance of your vehicle means fewer trips to the mechanic. If you want your car to perform to its full potential, then taking caution and extra care is the way to go.
